1928 Born in Baghdad, Iraq.
1952 Studied at the College of Commerce and Economics and graduated from it. Then, he joined the Baghdad Group for Modern Art.
1954 Participated in the Baghdad Group for Modern Art’s third exhibition in Baghdad. He participated in most of their exhibitions. He also obtained a certificate from the Institute of Fine Arts.
He taught fine arts at Al-Karkh High School and continued teaching until 1958, after which he worked as a teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts until his retirement.
1955 Participated in the itinerant Iraqi exhibition in India and exhibited one painting.
1956 Participated in the Baghdad Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture, held at Al-Mansour Club, exhibiting one painting.
1959 Sent on a fellowship to West Germany in Munich. There, he studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts and graduated, beginning to be influenced by the German Expressionist School.
1963 Sent a fellowship to Berlin, the capital of East Germany. He studied at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts, where he obtained a master’s degree. During his studies, he learned from prominent professors who were associated with the German Expressionist School, including Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Schmidt-Rottluff was one of the founders of the German art group known as "Die Brücke," established in 1905, which Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, a pioneer of Expressionism, influenced. Munch, born in 1863, lived and exhibited his works in Berlin in 1892. The members of "Die Brücke" included several notable artists, such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, and Erich Heckel. Additionally, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh also had a significant impact on this group.
He held a solo exhibition at S Gallery in Berlin.
1971 Participated in the Baghdad Group Exhibition on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the group's founding.
He dedicated most of his time to researching and teaching art history at the Institute of Fine Arts. As a skilled professor and brilliant orator, he radiated knowledge. He possessed a deep understanding of his specialty and was renowned for his intellectualism and the accuracy of the information he imparted. He often carried a large black bag filled with various art books, which accompanied him everywhere he went, as if he were bringing his entire office along with him.
07 April 1978 Participated in the Fifth April Exhibition at the Art Academy Hall in Baghdad.
1996 Passed away at the age of sixty-eight, and an honorary exhibition was held for him at the Athar Gallery in Baghdad.

- 1928 ولد الفنان رسول علوان في العاصمة بغداد في العراق.

- 1952 درس الفنان في كلية التجارة والاقتصاد وتخرج منها وأنتمى إلى جماعة بغداد للفن الحديث.

- 1954 اشترك في معرض جماعة بغداد للفن الحديث الثالث في بغداد واشترك في معظم معارضهم وحصل على شهادة من معهد الفنون الجميلة.

- درّس الفنون الجميلة في ثانوية الكرخ واستمر في التعليم لحد عام 1958 وبعدها عمل كمدرس في معهد الفنون الجميلة إلى تقاعده.

- 1955 اشترك في المعرض العراقي المتنقل في الهند وعرض لوحة واحدة.

- 1956 اشترك في معرض بغداد للرسم والنحت الذي أقيم في نادي المنصور وعرض لوحة واحدة.

- 1959 أبتعث في زمالة دراسية الى المانيا الغربية مدينة ميونخ، في ودرس في كلية الفنون الجميلة وتخرج منها وبدأ تأثره بالمدرسة التعبيرية الألمانية.

- 1963 أبتعث بزمالة دراسية إلى مدينة برلين عاصمة المانيا الشرقية ودرس في المعهد العالي للفنون الجميلة وحصل على شهادة الماجستير، حيث تعلّم الفنون على أساتذة بارزين من فناني المدرسة التعبيرية الألمانية مثل "كارل شمت روتلوف 1884-1976" وهو أحد مؤسسي جماعة الجسر الألمانية والتي تأسست في سنة 1905 والتي تأثرت بالفنان النرويجي ورائد التعبيرية "ادوارد مونخ" 1863 والذي عاش وعرض اعماله في برلين سنة 1892. وكان من أعضاء هذه الجماعة عدد من الفنانين منهم Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel، وتأثرت هذه الجماعة أيضا بالفنان الهولندي فان كوخ.

- أقام الفنان معرض شخصي في كاليري S في برلين.

- 1971 اشترك في معرض جماعة بغداد بمناسبة مرور عشرين عاماُ على تأسيس الجماعة.

- منح جلّ وقته للبحث والتدريس حيث يقال عنه أعطى وقته إلى البحث والتدريس لمادة التاريخ في معهد الفنون الجميلة، وكان أستاذاً حاذقاً وخطيباً بارعاً تنطلق منه المعارف كالسيل الذي لا يرد لسعة ثقافته ولدقة معلوماته، وكان يحمل معه حقيبة سوداء ضخمة فيها أنواع الكتب الفنية ترافقه أينما حل ورحل وكأنه يحمل معه مكتبه.

- 7 ابريل 1978 اشترك في معرض الحزب الخامس على قاعة أكاديمية الفنون في بغداد.

- 1996 توفى الفنان عن عمر يناهز الثمانية وستون وأقيم له معرض تكريمي على قاعة أثر في بغداد.

- عضو في جمعية أصدقاء الفن.

- عضو في جماعة بغداد للفن الحديث.

- عضو في جمعية الفنانين العراقيين.
