Nazar Selim (1925-1983) | Ibrahimi Collection

1925 Born in Ankara, Turkey, from a Mosuli father and a Baghdadi mother. He is the well-known son of Hajj Selim al-Mawsili, and he is the brother of Jewad Selim, Rashad Selim, Suad Selim, and Naziha Selim.
His older brother Suad Selim, who was a drawing teacher and one of the first cartoonists in Iraq, influenced him. He owned a written magazine called ‘Suad’.
The family had a good sense of humor, irony, jokes, and fun. Nazar grew up with a hobby of publishing and writing, as well as a love for music. He inherited the imagination for stories and storytelling from his mother and aunt.
1941 Participated for the first time in the Friends of Art Exhibition.
Mid 1940s Attempted to write and publish some of his literary works.
1951 Studied and graduated from the Faculty of Law and participated in the Faculty’s Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture at the Hall of the College of Arts and Sciences.
1953 Joined the Baghdad Group for Modern Art.
1955 Studied at the Institute of Fine Arts but was unable to complete his studies.
1955-1971 Worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before moving to Damascus, Syria for work.
1955 Held a solo exhibition in Bonn, Germany.
1956 Participated in the Baghdad Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture at Al-Mansour Club in Baghdad, in which he displayed 3 works and held a solo exhibition at the Institute of Fine Arts, Baghdad.
1957 Participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition in the UNESCO Hall in Beirut and displayed 2 works in it.
1958 Held a solo exhibition in Khartoum, Sudan.
1967 Held a solo exhibition in Stockholm, Sweden
He studied Chinese traditional art under Professor Xu for six months in Beijing. He also translated Chinese plays during this period of time.
1971 Participated in the exhibition of the One Dimension Group at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad.
1972 Appointed Director General of the Arts Department in the Ministry of Culture and Information.
1974 Participated in the Cultural Festival of Al-Thawra Newspaper in Baghdad and the 1st Arab Biennial Exhibition, Baghdad.
1975 Participated in the 2nd April Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad.
1976 Appointed as an art advisor to the Ministry of Culture and Information. He participated in the 3rd April Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad.
1977 Participated in the 4th April Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad.
1979 Held a solo exhibition, Baghdad.
1980 Held a solo exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad and participated in the 7th April Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad.
13 May 1982 Passed away from a heart attack at the age of fifty-seven and was buried next to his brother, Jewad Selim. A memorial ceremony and exhibition were held forty days after his death to honor him. He is known as an innovator in the field of cartooning in Iraq.

- 1925 ولد الفنان نزار سليم في العاصمة أنقرة في تركيا من أب موصلي وأم بغدادية وهو ابن الحاج سليم الموصلي المعروف وشقيق جواد سليم ورشاد سليم وسعاد سليم ونزيهة سليم.

- أثّر فيه أخوه الأكبر سعاد سليم الذي كان مدرساً للرسم والذي صار من أوائل رسامي الكاريكاتير في العراق وله مجلة خطّية باسم (سعاد).

- كانت العائلة تتمتع بحسّ الفكاهة والسخرية وحبّ النكتة وحب المرح. نمت لدى نزار هواية النشر والتأليف، وكذلك حب الموسيقى، وأخذ من أمّه وعمته خيال الأقاصيص والسرد الحكواتي.

- 1941 اشترك لأول مرة في معرض أصدقاء الفن.

- في متصف الأربعينات حاول كتابة ونشر بعض نتاجاته الأدبية.

- درس الفن التقليدي الصيني على يد الأستاذ شو لمدة ستة أشهر في بكين. وقد ترجم مسرحيات صينية.

- 1971 اشترك في معرض جماعة البعد الواحد على قاعة المتحف الوطني للفن الحديث في بغداد.

- 1972 تم تعيينه مدير عام قسم الفنون في وزارة الثقافة والإعلام.

- 13 مايس 1982 توفي الفنان جراء سكتة قلبية عن عمر يناهز السبعة والخمسين عاماً ودُفن بجوار أخيه الفنان جواد سليم وأُقيم له حفل ومعرض تأبيني لمرور الأربعين على وفاته، ويعتبر نزار سليم من المبدعين في مجال الرسم الكاريكتيري في العراق.
